Current Status - India’s Grid Scale ESS Market
India’s energy sector is undergoing a paradigm shift, with Energy Storage Systems (ESS) emerging as a critical enabler for renewable energy integration and grid stability. As per the National Electricity Plan, the energy storage capacity requirement is projected to be 82.37 GWh (47.65 GWh from PSP and 34.72 GWh from BESS) in the year 2026-27. This requirement is further expected to increase to 411.4 GWh (236.22 GWh from BESS) in the year 2031-32 and 1840 GWh by 2047.
102 ESS-related tenders have been issued since 2018, encompassing 139 GWh of ESS capacity and 41 GW of RE capacity. However, only 0.36 GWh of BESS capacity is currently operational, with an additional 1 GWh expected to be commissioned by mid-2025, underscoring a significant implementation gap.
50% (69.5 GWh) of ESS capacity is in execution, 27% (37.53 GWh) has been annulled, and 32% (44.52 GWh) remains in the tendering process. BESS continues to dominate recent tenders, including standalone systems, solar + BESS, and RE hybrid + BESS configurations.
23 GWh of ESS capacity, including 11 GWh of BESS, is awaiting off-takers, with some projects stalled for over six months after price discovery.
Key Drivers Shaping Utility Scale Tenders
Falling Battery Costs
Turnkey ESS costs in the international market hit a record low of $100/kWh for BESS systems in 2025, enhancing India’s cost competitiveness. Tariffs for standalone BESS in India have dropped over 66% over two years.
Government Support
Policy measures such as the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of Rs. 27 Lakh/MWh and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme have enhanced project viability.
Regulatory Push
The inclusion of energy storage obligations and mandates of storage with all upcoming tenders within renewable energy has further catalyzed demand.
India’s ESS market presents immense potential but necessitates structural reforms, robust financing mechanisms, and strengthened policy frameworks to bridge the gap between tenders and actual operational capacity. Timely project execution, strategic public-private partnerships, and enhanced regulatory clarity will be key enablers for India’s sustainable energy future.
Integrated Solar & BESS: Need of the Hour ..
- India’s RE landscape is pivoting toward grid resilience, with BESS positioned as the linchpin for bridging the 139 GWh of tendered capacity and the mere 0.36 GWh operational today.
- The C&I sector, responsible for ~50% of national power demand, faces acute pain points. Industries like steel, cement, pharma, and hyperscale data centres require 24/7 decarbonized energy but grapple with peak-hour reliance on costly DISCOM power and fragmented RE procurement. While 69.5 GWh of ESS capacity is under execution, delayed PPAs, cross-subsidy-laden tariffs, and unaddressed peak deficits undermine ROI for RE100-aligned players.
- Solar and wind generation often fails to align with peak demand hours, compelling commercial and industrial consumers to depend on non-renewable power during high-usage periods. Without integrated energy storage, this imbalance hampers reliability, delays decarbonization targets, and diminishes the financial returns on green energy investments.
- Deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) charged via solar/wind enables stored clean energy to be dispatched during peak demand, ensuring grid stability, maximizing renewable utilization, and delivering cost-optimized, sustainable power.
- This hybrid model—combining generation, storage, and dynamic tariff strategies—addresses energy security needs, accelerates business profitability through PPAs, and aligns with targets for 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. LiTE Energy’s tech-driven platform bridges this gap, transforming intermittent renewables into a reliable, high-return green energy asset for industries as well as utilities.
Generation Profile Alignment using Solar & BESS
Wind peaks at night (10 PM–5 AM) but is low during critical peak hours (4–6 AM, 6–8 PM).
Misalignment with demand makes grid integration challenging.
Solar generates during the day (7am- 6pm), and BESS discharges in the evening (6pm-10pm).
Addresses evening peak but does not dover morning demand
Ensures energy availability during both morning (6am-8am) and evening (6pm-12am) peaks.
More reliable than Solar-Wind Hybrid due to on-demand energy availability
Solar & BESS Dominance
BESS Cost Reduction: Lithium-ion BESS costs declined by 20% annually (NREL 2023), with recent GoI / VGF tenders BESS achieving tariffs as low.
Solar-Wind Hybrid Challenges: High capital costs (₹5–6 Cr/MW for wind vs. ₹3–4 Cr/MW for solar) and low wind CUF (~25%) reduce ROI.
Land Use: BESS: 0.013 acres/MWh (5 MWh fits in a 20-ft container). Wind: 3–4 acres/MW (contiguous elevated land required).
Transmission Losses: Co-located BESS reduces losses by 5–8% vs. standalone solar/wind.
Other Critical Parameters supporting BESS
Ancillary Services
BESS Participates in frequency regulation (PJM/ERCOT Analogs) and capacity markets.
Peak Shaving & Duration
Avoids DISCOM reliance on expensive thermal power during peaks (₹ 8 – 12 / kWh), peak hour stretching beyond 8 hours over single – two periods.
Round-Trip Efficiency
Li-Ion BESS achieves 85% – 95%, minimizing curtailment losses.
Prioritize Solar + BESS
Leverage declining batter costs and high CUF for firm & dispatchable power.
Optimize Land use
Deploy modular BESS in dese solar zones to reduce transmission losses.
Transmission Losses Optimization
by 5% – 8%, enhancing overall efficiency. Typically, standalone wind or solar projects experience losses in the range of 12% - 15%. However integrating BESS at the generation sites minimized these losses, improving energy delivery and system performance. Ultimately this results in higher savings and better financial outcomes compared to independent solar or wind systems.
Banking Restrictions
Grid restrictions on renewables during the peak periods to avoid grid disbalancing opened up vast scope for BESS storage.
DC-DC Coupling
Further reduces losses at renewable generation behind the inverters.
ISTS Waivers
Transmission and Wheeling Charge Exemptions for the Solar & BESS co-located plants.
Mandatory Storage
Few states have mandated BESS integration when capacities exceeding 100% of the contract demand of the renewables with at least 20% of the capacities
Opportunity in C & I Segment
- India’s commercial and industrial (C&I) sector, accounting for over 50% of national power consumption, faces systemic inefficiencies in securing reliable, cost-optimized green energy. Despite ambitious decarbonization pledges (RE100, ESG mandates), industries like cement, steel, pharma, and data centers struggle to align 24/7 operational demand with intermittent solar/wind supply and costly grid dependencies.
- Current captive models & IPPs are unable to address peak-hour deficits, while cross-subsidies, wheeling losses, and inflated landed costs erode margins. State utilities further bottleneck progress via delayed PPAs and inflexible tariff structures.

- To bridge this gap by deploying AI-optimized Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) charged via solar/wind, paired with dynamic tariff algorithms to deliver dispatchable green power during peak demand. Our scalable PPA framework guarantees C&I buyers grid parity, slashing procurement costs by 30–40% while ensuring 60–90% renewable penetration.
- By integrating EMS for real-time load forecasting and Delta-driven pricing, we mitigate grid volatility, accelerate ROI for high intensity sectors (data centres, steel), and unlock India’s $12B C&I storage market.
- This platform aligns with India’s 500 GW renewable target, offering investors a first-mover advantage in a sector poised for 20% CAGR, driven by regulatory tailwinds and industrial decarbonization urgency.
